Alternative soul and Caribbean music are what determine Mulato’s ambience. The music incorporates influences of jazz, soul, lounge, electronic dance, as well as folklore from Brazil and the Dutch Antilles. Not a combination you’re bound to hear every day. Mulato is an initiative of JJ Rojer and Ralph Durgaram. Before, guitarist JJ Rojer worked with Paquito de Rivera and the Lincoln Center Big Band of Wynton Marsalis. Ralph Durgaram used to play drums with rock band The Wrong, worked as a producer for Arcade and was also active on the Amsterdam dance scene. Since last year, the two musicians have been working together in this alternative Caribbean formation. They will release the first CD of this original project soon. On it will also be the fantastic voice of Tony Worrel, resident of Curacao. Percussionist Pernell Saturnino, who has worked with Marsalis and Chick Corea, will also be heard on the disc. Both will join Mulato on stage.
