TBC Brass Band makes for musical surprises

8-8-2012 12:05

The band was formed ten years ago by young men from the 7th and 9th Wards in New Orleans, Louisiana. Creating a jazz and brass band was their way to avoid the life that befell many of their friends and classmates, involving drugs and violence. The band started at Carver Senior High School in New Orleans, where they borrowed instruments which sometimes had to be taped together. For example, the tuba was treated with duct tape to patch a hole in the horn. Impressing with their very first performance on school grounds, the band’s reputation grew fast, and since 2010 they have been touring the US as well as abroad. Their new album Magic City, though also rejoicing life, can be considered a tribute to their band member and saxophone player Brandon Franklin, who was killed in a senseless act of violence in 2010 at age 22.
