Mana confirmed for Curaçao North Sea Jazz

26-3-2012 10:24

On Saturday September 1st, the Mexican band Maná will be playing on Curaçao North Sea Jazz. Mexican rockband Maná’s roots go way back, to 1975, when an earlier formation was playing under the name Sombrero Verde. As Maná, they had their first hit in 1991 with Rayando El Sol, off their second album 'Falta Amor'. The band toured extensively and found even bigger success with their third album, 1994’s 'Donde Jugaran Los Niños?', which turned them into Latin rockstars. From 1997 onwards, their fame spread into the US and the rest of the world, partly due to an MTV Unplugged session and a collaboration with Carlos Santana on his album 'Supernatural'. Meanwhile, the band has put four Grammy’s, seven Latin Grammy’s and five MTV Awards Latin America to their name, among others, and sold over 25 million records so far. They released their latest, the long-awaited 'Drama Y Luz', in 2011.

Earlier we announced Santana, Rubén Blades, Randy Crawford & Joe Sample Trio and many others. Official ticketsales for the festival start on April 2nd, but you can already reserve you tickets via 522-JAZZ or www.caribbean.nl.

More names: Sergio George’ All Star Salsa Friends, Jill Scott and India.Arie

8-3-2012 19:00

Several weeks ago we were proud to already announce Santana and Rubén Blades, in the meantime many more artists are known for the upcoming edition of the Curaçao North Sea Jazz festival.  On Friday 31 August, Caro Emerald, Jill Scott and Buika will also perform. For the next day Randy Crawford & Joe Sample Trio, Waylon, Paquito D’Rivera, and India.Arie are confirmed.

Especially for the third edition of Curaçao North Sea Jazz, Sergio George put a band together: the Sergio George’ All Star Salsa Friends. No less than El Canario, Servando y Florentino, Cheo Feliciano, Andy Montañez, Luis Enrique, Ivy Queen, Aimee Nuviola, Johnny Rivera, Willy Garcia and Willie Chirino will play together with Sergio George. Expectations are high as these titans are now united in one single band.

Caro Emerald immediately broke through in The Netherlands with the single Back It Up. It became an enormous hit and successor A Night Like This scored even better. Her debut album Deleted Scenes From The Cutting Room Floor entered the charts at number 1 and stayed there so long that it shattered a previous record set by Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Last year, Caro Emerald conquered the world and this summer she can now also be seen at the Curaçao North Sea Jazz festival. Soul-singer Jill Scott from Philadelphia started her career as spoken-word artist. She was discovered by The Roots’ drummer Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson. With her debut-cd Who is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1 she became one of the most important representatives of the neo soul. The third lady to perform on Friday is Buika, a Spanish singer who mixes many different styles (flamenco, copla, jazz, rumba, soul) and who may also be heard as vocalist on house tracks. Buika, a native of Majorca, started singing and performing in bars and clubs there. She has already made three albums and also worked together with Chucho Valdés, with whom she made El Ultimo Trago.

For Saturday, Waylon is confirmed. Waylon was the first Dutch solo artist who was signed by the renowned Motown-label. He scored a big hit with his first single Wicked Ways and his debut album Wicked Ways earned a Platinum Disc. Last year saw the release of his second album After All.  Cuban artist Paquito D’Rivera has been performing since he was seven years old. In the early 70s, he formed the Orchestra Cubana Musica Moderna with pianist Chucho Valdés. In subsequent years, the sympathetic musician made more than 30 solo albums and won as many as nine Grammy Awards.  Randy Crawford & Joe Sample Trio. In the early 70s, pianist Joe Sample discovered the superior qualities of singer Randy Crawford when he saw her perform as supporting act to George Benson. The shy singer had been standing around a bit, but when she opened her mouth, Sample’s world changed. 'It was so incredible. As if an angel floated through the room. From that moment on I knew her fate lay in my hands.’  When his band The Crusaders planned to record the record Street Life , Sample had only one singer in mind: Crawford. India.Arie’s debut-cd Acoustic Soul was considered the best soul album of 2001 and received no less than seven Grammy nominations.  The singer is famous for her warm tones and her inspiring lyrics that both  describe her own life as well as tackle social issues.

Santana headliner third Curacao North Sea Jazz

1-2-2012 10:56

Carlos Santana, the guitar legend who needs no introduction, will come to the third edition of Curacao North Sea Jazz with his band! He will be festival headliner on Friday. The Mexican superstar gained his fame in the 60's and 70's when his band Santana pioneered with a fusion of rock, salsa and jazz. Ruben Bladés will again perform at the festival on Friday. Last year the popular Panamanian singer played the Sir Duke stage but due to the enormous interest, not all visitors were able to see his concert.

The third name we can announce is the Dizzy Gillespie™ All-Star Big Band. The band will play on Friday with many Gillespie alumni, such as Paquito D'Rivera who will lead the big band during the Curacao North Sea Jazz Festival. The in Havana born Paquito is considered the most creative Cuban jazz musician and one of the best clarinet players in the world. For Saturday, we can announce the presence of James Farm. The brand new band includes saxophonist Joshua Redman who teamed up with a great talent of the new generation of jazz, pianist Aaron Parks. They play with a superb rhythm section: bassist Matt Penman and drummer Eric Harland.

This year not just one, but two free concerts will take place before the festival. On Sunday, August 26th and Monday, August 27th Curacao can enjoy free concerts at the Brionplein. We will soon announce who the artists will be.

On its previous two editions Curacao North Sea Jazz has shown that it’s a world class event. International artists performed at the festival in the Caribbean. Media in various countries have reported about the atmospheric event and praise the hospitality of Curacao.

Curacao North Sea Jazz Festival is supported by Bon Intenshon Foundation. The rest of the artist line-up will be announced in the coming months. Currently, the programmers of the festival and Gregory Elias are talking with various artists in order to create a varied and attractive program.
